My Polish roots
My family came to the US from Poland in 1937 – well before the war and, thankfully, very few remained behind. Over the years, I have wanted to go to Poland and see the places where my parents grew up, Krakow, Lublin and Warsaw. This year, finally, I am going and taking my own children with me. But before going, it was important to me that my kids know something about the country, after all, it's something more than just a regular vacation.
I trued books, the internet, but nothing seemed to really grip them. Then I saw my son playing on his IPad – BINGO! I started looking for applications for the IPad about Poland – not surprisingly, there are a lot. So, in order not to drown in a sea of information, I went to an apps review site, 10TravelApps.com, and looked at the Poland apps they recommended. I chose three, downloaded them to Jack's IPad and left him to his own devices.
It was a total success! Next day he came and told me how great the apps were. I asked him how they were different from a web site about Poland and he laughed. According to Jack, and his sister, Linda, backed him up, they were a lot more interesting and fun than a web site on their laptops. He also said that when we are in Poland, we can use them all the time without having to be connected or pay roaming charges. Since when have my kids been interested in saving money? Truly a miracle!
I took the plunge and gave him a challenge. I asked him and his sister to plan our itinerary in Poland. I gave them the dates of the trip and the places we had to go to (Warsaw, Krakow and Lublin) and left the rest up to them. They had up until a month before our trip to come up with a schedule that we'd then discuss and make changes to, if necessary.
That was 3 weeks ago, our flight is booked for the 5th of January 2012, and they already came back to me with their first draft program. They showed me the route using the application maps as well as pictures, video clips and tourist information about the different destinations. Janice and I made a few suggestions which they said that they'd \\"look into\\" and that's it, so far.
