TRAVELING WITH APPS - Munich

Munich

It's ironic that the last item in my mother's diary are from her time in Munich. She arrived here with her family in 1932 after her father was transferred here from Stuttgart. They lived here in happily until 1940 mainly because her father wasn't Jewish, just her mother. So for a while they were left alone by the Nazis and my mother wrote about her school and her time in some of the 68 Jewish youth clubs and organizations that existed in the city then. Here too was the first time we actually found her home. They had lived in the then, and still, fashionable Hofgarten neighborhood in a grand house. The people living there now asked us not to give the exact address, but they let us in and we actually walked in the house where my mother spent some of her late teenage years.

For me that was like closing the circle and at that moment I decided that I didn't want to go to Dachau just 16 Kms. away but rather just enjoy the city that my mother spoke about so warmly in her diary.

Modern Munich

Modern Munich is a far cry from the Munich of 1936 when the Nazis took power. Today, it is a bright and vibrant city that belies its dark past. It's a city with lots to see and do but the highlight of our stay was the tour of Neuschwanstein Castle.

The Munich apps suggested the tour, but they also said that it was a good idea to take an all inclusive guided tour from Munich that included the travel time to Fussen. But we decided to go it alone and used the apps to get the train and bus timetables and easily managed the journey. Our tour around the castle was really fascinating. The castle itself looks like it's straight out of a fairy tale and the app gave us information and details every time we pointed the camera at something.

After returning from Neuschwanstein the apps suggested going to the Hofbrauhaus Beer Hall. The food was good, the beer excellent, but it was full and noisy and I couldn't help but think of the German beer cellars and their Nazi drinkers back in the 1940's.

Anyway, in my next post I'll sum up our visit for the sake of posterity. But that will be when we get back to the US of A. By for now
