TRAVELING WITH APPS - Amsterdam

My Amsterdam Diary

Day one: Landed at Schiphol and got the shuttle to my hotel in Amsterdam. Booked in, unpacked and went straight out with my IPad in one hand and an umbrella in the other. Started my Amsterdam in 3D app and looked for museums – did you know that are over 50 in this city? Anyway, as it was still only 10:00 a.m. I decided to start with the Rijksmuseum. Absolutely stunning with works of art that just take your breath away. The only problem is that there is just too much to absorb in one go so, after a couple of hours I left and went for a bite to eat. Used the Gastronomic Journey in Amsterdam app to find a good and cheap restaurant close by then hired a bike (pedal variety) to explore Amsterdam like a local using the Amsterdam Bike Planner app to choose a route. Got back to the hotel at around 18:00, exhausted! Had a sandwich and a coffee in the coffee bar, shower and fast asleep by 20:00.

Day two: Obviously, after going to sleep so early, I was up by 06:30. Breakfast in the hotel, nice weather outside so no umbrella today, just the IPad. Since it was early, I decided to go and see the Bloemenmarkt a floating flower market in existence since 1862. My Amsterdam 2Go app showed me the way. So many varieties, colors and smells. Who would have thought that there was so much beauty in the world? After coffee and a cake, I set out to find one of Amsterdam's famous Coffee Shops. Amsterdam in 3D recommended a couple of places and showed me the route. All I can say is that the smell as you open the door is overpowering. Not really for me so just had (another) cup of regular coffee and sat and watched. Wandered along some canals just admiring the houses and the sites before choosing random restaurant for a late dinner. The off to the Comedy Café, a sort of Dutch Comedy Central where a lot of the performances are in English. Had a really great time – thoroughly recommend it. Supper at the Reypenaer Cheese Tasting Rooms, excellent value for money and some great cheeses.

Day three: Last day, flight leaves this afternoon. So I decided to take a look at the Red Light District. To be honest, a bit over the top for my liking, almost kitsch really. Final coffee and some home backed Dutch bread with Dutch cheese at a small café before back to the hotel, checkout and off to Schiphol for the flight back to London.

Had a great time and managed to cram an awful lot into just two and a bit days – mainly thanks to my iPad.
